Mask ~ Kifwebe ~ Design Three
Story behind the product ~ Kifwebe masks played a central role in Songye society enacting control over the social order, and participating in crucial activities such as initiations. Mask, colours and costume all have symbolic meaning. Facial elements are associated with certain animals whose particular behaviours are considered intrinsic to the mask. The use of white on the mask symbolises positive concepts such as purity and peace, the moon and light.
