Shongwe Mask (Kifwebe)

Face masks are traditionally hand carved and personify great significance. Originating in North Shaba, inhabited by both  Songye and Luba groups.  The Kifwebe members visually carved special codes in the mask’s features, depicting distinctions between a single female mask and male masks which are reflected in color and in sculptural features.
