In traditional Africa, shields were used not only as defensive weapons, but also as decorative or ritual objects filled with symbolic meaning and prestige as most other things that are crafted by different tribes. These shields are carved from one piece of wood and mounted on stand.

It is thought that the wooden African shield originated from the Tikar tribe in Cameroon.
